How the 8th Pay Commission calculation works
New basic pay = current basic pay × fitment factor
The fitment factor does two jobs. First it absorbs the dearness allowance you already get, which is 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. That alone needs a factor of 1.60. Anything above that is the real rise. After the new pay starts, DA restarts from 0% and climbs again with inflation.
The 7th Pay Commission worked the same way: its factor of 2.57 was 2.25 to absorb 125% DA, plus a real rise of about 14%. HRA rates also step down when DA restarts, because the higher HRA rates apply only once DA crosses 25% and 50%.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission?
It is the number your current basic pay is multiplied by to get the new basic pay. The 7th Pay Commission used 2.57. The 8th Pay Commission has not recommended a factor yet. The staff side (NC-JCM) asked for 3.83 in April 2026, which would take the minimum basic pay from ₹18,000 to about ₹69,000.
How much will my salary increase in the 8th Pay Commission?
Multiply your basic pay by the fitment factor. Because DA (now 60%) is folded into the new basic pay and restarts at 0%, a factor of 1.60 only keeps your basic plus DA unchanged. The real rise is the factor divided by 1.60, minus one: about 25% at 2.0, 42% at 2.28, 61% at 2.57 and 139% at 3.83.
What will be the minimum salary under the 8th Pay Commission?
The minimum basic pay today is ₹18,000 at Level 1. At a fitment factor of 2.28 it would be about ₹41,000, at 2.57 about ₹46,300, and at the staff side's demand of 3.83 about ₹68,900.
When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?
The Commission was set up on 3 November 2025 and has 18 months to report, so its recommendations are expected around May 2027. Pay commissions have taken effect every ten years from 1 January, so 1 January 2026 is the expected effective date, with arrears for the months in between. The government has not confirmed this.
What happens to DA after the 8th Pay Commission?
When the new pay applies, the DA accumulated so far is absorbed into the new basic pay and DA restarts from 0%, then rises again twice a year with inflation. This is what happened on 1 January 2016, when 125% DA was absorbed under the 7th Pay Commission.
How is pension revised under the 8th Pay Commission?
Basic pension is usually multiplied by the same fitment factor, and dearness relief restarts from 0%. A basic pension of ₹20,000 would become about ₹51,400 at a factor of 2.57.
