Frequently asked questions
How is RD interest calculated?
Banks and India Post compound RD interest quarterly. Each monthly instalment earns interest from the month it is paid until maturity, so the first instalment earns the most. The calculator adds up every instalment's growth.
What is the Post Office RD interest rate?
The Post Office 5-year Recurring Deposit pays 6.7% a year, compounded quarterly, for October–December 2026. The government reviews the rate every quarter.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS if your total deposit interest with them exceeds ₹50,000 a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens).
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?
Banks usually charge a small penalty for a late instalment, and several missed instalments can lead to the account being closed. India Post charges a default fee and allows the account to be revived within a set period.
RD or SIP: which is better?
An RD gives a guaranteed return with no market risk, which suits short-term goals. A SIP in equity funds has historically earned more over long periods but can fall in value. Many people use both.
