EPS pension formula
Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70
Pensionable salary is your average basic + DA over the 60 months before contributions stop, capped at the wage ceiling. With 35 years of service at the ₹25,000 ceiling the pension is ₹13,214 a month; at the old ₹15,000 ceiling it was ₹7,929. Service of 20 years or more gets 2 extra years.
The ceiling has changed over time: ₹5,000 until May 2001, ₹6,500 until August 2014, ₹15,000 until 16 September 2026 and ₹25,000 since. For the 2014 change, EPFO valued service before 1 September 2014 at ₹6,500 and later service at ₹15,000. The calculator does the same by default, and lets you check the result if all service is valued at ₹25,000.

Frequently asked questions
How is EPS pension calculated?
Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is your average basic + DA over the last 60 months, capped at the wage ceiling (₹25,000 from 17 September 2026). With 35 years of service at the full ceiling that is ₹25,000 × 35 ÷ 70 = ₹13,214 a month.
What changed with the ₹25,000 wage ceiling?
From 17 September 2026 the ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, so the employer's EPS share rose from ₹1,250 to up to ₹2,083 a month and the highest pensionable salary rose with it. When the ceiling last rose in 2014, EPFO valued earlier service at the old ceiling. It has not yet said whether service before 17 September 2026 counts at ₹15,000 or ₹25,000, so the calculator shows both.
How many years of service do I need for a pension?
At least 10 years. With less, you can take a lump-sum withdrawal benefit when you leave, or keep the service so it adds to a later PF job. Service of 20 years or more gets 2 extra years in the formula.
Can I get EPS pension before 58?
Yes, from age 50 if you have left PF-covered work and have 10 years of service. The pension is cut by 4% for each year before 58, so starting at 50 gives 68% of the full amount, for life. You can also defer it to 59 or 60 for 4% more a year.
What is the minimum EPS pension?
₹1,000 a month for members with at least 10 years of service. After the member's death the spouse gets 50% of the pension, also at least ₹1,000.
What is the higher pension option?
Members who, with their employer, contributed to EPS on their full salary above the ceiling and had this accepted by EPFO get pension on their actual average pay. The Supreme Court allowed eligible members to apply in 2022; most members are not in it. Use the higher pension switch only if EPFO has approved it for you.
Does EPS pension increase every year?
No. EPS pays a fixed monthly amount for life; there is no dearness relief. That is why the calculator also shows what the pension is worth in today's money.
