  • In the old regime, the deposit counts towards 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh), saving up to ₹20,800 at the 20% slab in the year you invest.
  • The interest accrued in years 1–4, ₹34,544, is treated as reinvested: declare it as income each year and claim the same amount under 80C if you have room left in the limit.
  • After tax at 20%, your return is 6.27% a year. A 5-year bank FD at an example 6.5% would pay ₹1,38,042 before tax, against ₹1,44,903 from NSC.
  • In today's money, at 6% inflation, the post-tax maturity is worth about ₹1,01,301.

Interest accrued each year

Nothing is paid out until maturity; each year's interest is added to the certificate's value.

Maturity = P × (1 + r)5

Compare NSC's 7.7% with your bank's 5-year tax-saver FD rate: both lock in for 5 years, count for 80C in the old regime and are taxable. For tax-free growth with a longer lock-in, compare the PPF calculator; for a bank deposit, use the FD calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NSC interest rate now?

7.7% a year for October–December 2026, compounded yearly and paid at maturity. The rate on the date of purchase applies for the full 5 years.

How is NSC maturity calculated?

Maturity = amount × (1 + 7.7%)^5. ₹1,000 grows to ₹1,449 (₹1449.03) after 5 years.

Can I claim NSC interest under 80C?

Yes, in the old regime. The interest accrued in each of the first 4 years is deemed reinvested, so you declare it as income and can claim the same amount under 80C, within the overall ₹1.5 lakh limit. The fifth year's interest is paid out, so it is taxable without an 80C claim.

Is NSC interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate. You can declare it each year as it accrues (which makes the 80C claim possible) or all at once in the year of maturity. No TDS is deducted on NSC.

How much can I invest in NSC?

At least ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹100, with no upper limit. Only ₹1.5 lakh a year counts for 80C in the old regime.

Can I encash NSC before 5 years?

Only in specific cases: on the death of the holder, on forfeiture by a pledgee, or by court order. NSC can be pledged as security for a loan.
