  • A bank FD compounding quarterly would need 7.30% to double your money in the same 115 months. At 7%, the FD gives ₹1,94,455, which is ₹5,545 less than KVP.
  • KVP interest is taxable at your slab, either each year as it accrues or all at maturity. At 20%, tax of about ₹20,800 leaves ₹1,79,200. There is no 80C deduction.
  • You can encash KVP after 30 months (2½ years) at a lower value; before that only on the holder's death or by court order.
  • KVP has no upper limit, but investments above ₹50,000 need a PAN, and above ₹10 lakh proof of the source of funds.

KVP vs FD over time

Values in between are approximate; India Post pays fixed amounts on premature encashment.

KVP vs FD

Months to double = 12 × log 2 ÷ log (1 + r)

₹1 lakh in a quarterly-compounding FD at 7% would be ₹1,94,455 after 115 months, against ₹2,00,000 from KVP. Check your bank's rate on the FD calculator; for a 5-year option with an 80C benefit, see the NSC calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the KVP interest rate now?

7.5% a year for October–December 2026, compounded yearly. At this rate your money doubles in 115 months (9 years 7 months). The rate and period on the purchase date apply until maturity.

How is the KVP doubling period worked out?

It is the time for 7.5% compounded yearly to double the amount: log 2 ÷ log 1.075 = 9.58 years, or 115 months. The government notifies the period with each rate change.

Is KVP better than an FD?

KVP matches a bank FD at about 7.30% compounded quarterly over the same period. If your bank pays more than that for a similar term, the FD earns more; KVP's advantage is the sovereign guarantee and a fixed doubling. Both are taxable.

Is KVP interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate. You can declare it each year on an accrual basis or all in the year of maturity. KVP does not qualify for 80C, and no TDS is deducted.

Can I withdraw KVP early?

Yes, after 30 months (2½ years) from the date of issue, at the encashment value set by India Post. Before that, only on the death of a holder, forfeiture by a pledgee, or a court order.

How much can I invest in KVP?

At least ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹100, with no upper limit. Investments above ₹50,000 need a PAN, and above ₹10 lakh proof of the source of funds.
