  • PPF interest and maturity are tax-free. A taxable FD would need to pay about 10.3% to match 7.1% for someone in the 30% slab.
  • In the old tax regime, deposits count towards 80C: up to ₹46,800 of tax saved each year at the 30% slab.
  • In today's money, at 6% inflation, the maturity is worth about ₹16,97,522.
  • Deposit by 5 April each year: PPF interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PPF interest rate now?

7.1% a year for October–December 2026, compounded yearly. The government sets small savings rates every quarter; PPF has been at 7.1% for several years.

How is PPF interest calculated?

Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. Depositing before the 5th, ideally by 5 April for a yearly deposit, earns the most.

How much can I invest in PPF?

At least ₹500 and at most ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year, in one go or in instalments. Deposits above ₹1.5 lakh earn no interest.

Is PPF tax-free?

Yes. PPF has exempt-exempt-exempt status: interest and maturity are tax-free, and in the old tax regime deposits qualify for the 80C deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. To continue depositing you must apply within one year of maturity using the prescribed form.

Can I withdraw from PPF before maturity?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, subject to limits. Loans against the balance are available from the 3rd to the 6th year. Premature closure is allowed after 5 years only for specific reasons, such as serious illness or higher education.
