How Atal Pension Yojana works
You join through the bank or post office where you hold a savings account. The contribution is fixed by your age at joining and the pension you choose, and is auto-debited until you turn 60. The money is invested by pension funds under PFRDA rules, and the government guarantees the minimum pension even if returns fall short.
- From 60: a pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month to you, for life.
- After you: the same pension to your spouse, for life.
- After both: the corpus to your nominee, ₹1,70,000 for ₹1,000, ₹3,40,000 for ₹2,000, ₹5,10,000 for ₹3,000, ₹6,80,000 for ₹4,000, ₹8,50,000 for ₹5,000.
Example: joining at 25 for a ₹5,000 pension costs ₹376 a month for 35 years, ₹1,57,920 in all. Joining at 30 costs ₹577 a month for 30 years, ₹2,07,720 in all: ₹201 more a month and ₹49,800 more in total for the same pension.
Cost of delay: ₹5,000 pension by joining age
Monthly contributions. The pension and the nominee's corpus are the same at every age; the total you pay rises with age.

Frequently asked questions
How much do I pay in Atal Pension Yojana for ₹5,000 pension?
It depends on your age when you join: ₹210 a month at 18, ₹376 at 25, ₹577 at 30, ₹902 at 35 and ₹1,454 at 40. You pay until 60, and the amount stays the same throughout.
Who can join Atal Pension Yojana?
Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings bank or post office savings account. From 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer cannot join. Nominee and spouse details are mandatory.
What does the nominee get in APY?
After the subscriber and then the spouse have both died, the nominee gets the pension wealth built up until the subscriber turned 60. The official chart shows ₹1,70,000 for ₹1,000, ₹3,40,000 for ₹2,000, ₹5,10,000 for ₹3,000, ₹6,80,000 for ₹4,000, ₹8,50,000 for ₹5,000.
Can I pay APY quarterly or half-yearly?
Yes. The bank can auto-debit monthly, quarterly or half-yearly. Each has its own amount in the chart: for a ₹5,000 pension at 25 it is ₹376 a month, ₹1,136 a quarter or ₹2,294 every six months.
What happens if I miss an APY payment?
The bank collects the missed contribution later with overdue interest of ₹1 a month for every ₹100 or part of it: on a ₹376 monthly contribution that is ₹4 for each month of delay. The interest goes into your pension account, and the account is not closed for non-payment.
Can I exit APY before 60?
Voluntary exit before 60 is allowed, but you get back only your own contributions with the net income actually earned on them, after charges, not the guaranteed pension. If the subscriber dies before 60, the spouse can continue the account until the subscriber would have turned 60 and then draw the same pension, or take the accumulated corpus.
Can I change my APY pension amount later?
Yes. You can move to a higher or lower pension slab once a year, currently in April. Your contribution changes to the chart amount for the new slab.
