The short answer
Destination wedding cost in India averaged about **₹58 lakh** in WedMeGood's 2025 survey, against about ₹39.5 lakh for all weddings. A wedding in Udaipur for about 150 guests over two or three days commonly costs about ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh, and palace hotels push it past ₹1 crore. Goa, Kerala and Rishikesh can cost less. Guest rooms, the number of nights and GST at 18% on premium hotel bills are what decide the total.
Destination wedding cost in India: the averages
A destination wedding is one held away from the family's home town, usually at a resort or heritage hotel where guests stay for two or three nights. The host often pays for the rooms and all meals, which is why these weddings cost more even with fewer guests.
These are averages from a survey of over 2,000 couples marrying between April 2025 and March 2026. Your own cost depends on the place, the hotel, the guest list and the dates. The popular choices named in the survey coverage include Jaipur, Udaipur, Goa, Mussoorie and Kerala.
Wedding in Udaipur cost, and other popular places
The ranges below come from wedding platforms, planners and lenders that publish budget guides. They are rough totals for a wedding of about 100 to 200 guests, not quotes. Prices vary by city, season, guest count and vendor, and the top end has no real limit.
| Place | About this much in total | What drives the price |
|---|---|---|
| Udaipur | ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh for about 150 guests over 3 days; palace hotels can cross ₹1 crore | Lake-facing palace hotels; limited luxury rooms on peak dates |
| Jaipur and Jodhpur | About ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh in budget guides; palace weddings about ₹30 lakh to ₹1 crore | Heritage hotels and forts; wide choice from mid-range to luxury |
| Goa | About ₹15 lakh to ₹30 lakh up to 100 guests; ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh for 100 to 200 | Beach permits, North or South Goa, 4-star or 5-star resort |
| Kerala | About ₹15 lakh to ₹70 lakh across published budget guides | Backwater resorts; transport between airport and venue |
| Rishikesh | Resort packages from about ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh; more for bigger weddings | Smaller resorts; fewer rooms per property |
In Udaipur, catering at luxury palace hotels has been listed from about ₹3,000 to over ₹10,000 a plate (WeddingWire India, 2023 listings), and current prices may be higher. Mid-range resorts in most destinations quote much less, so ask each venue for its per-plate rate with GST before comparing.
What drives the cost of a destination wedding
- Guest count. Every guest needs a room share and every meal, not just one dinner. One extra guest can cost many times more than at a home-town wedding.
- Number of nights. Each extra night adds a full day of rooms and three meals for everyone.
- Room blocks. Hotels ask the host to book a fixed number of rooms (a room block) for the event. If fewer guests come, you may still pay for the empty rooms.
- Season. November to February is the busiest and most expensive period. A Goa budget guide by IIFL estimates peak-season costs about 20% to 40% higher than in April to October.
- Travel. Flights or trains for guests, airport pickups and local transport between venues. Some hosts pay for close family only.
Worked budget: 150 guests, 2 nights
Here is one example at a mid-range resort. Assume 150 guests sharing 75 rooms for 2 nights at ₹12,000 a room a night, six meals at an average of ₹2,500 a plate, and the host paying travel for 80 guests at about ₹10,000 each. Decor, photography and other vendor amounts are taken as including their GST. These are example inputs, not quotes.
| Item | How it is worked out | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms | 75 rooms × 2 nights × ₹12,000 | ₹18,00,000 |
| GST on rooms | 18%, as the tariff is above ₹7,500 | ₹3,24,000 |
| Food | 150 guests × 6 meals × ₹2,500 | ₹22,50,000 |
| GST on food | 18% at a hotel with rooms above ₹7,500 | ₹4,05,000 |
| Decor and flowers | Mehendi, sangeet, wedding and stage | ₹10,00,000 |
| Photography and video | Team for all events | ₹3,00,000 |
| Music and entertainment | DJ, band or live act | ₹3,00,000 |
| Planner fee | Coordination on site | ₹3,00,000 |
| Guest travel | 80 guests × ₹10,000 | ₹8,00,000 |
| Total | Before clothes, jewellery and gifts | ₹74,79,000 |
That is about ₹49,860 a guest, before clothes, jewellery and gifts. Rooms and food with their GST make up about ₹47,79,000 of the total, which is why the guest list and the number of nights matter most. Cutting one night removes roughly half the room bill and two or three meals for every guest.
Destination vs home-town wedding: a comparison
A home-town wedding usually has more guests but far lower costs per guest, because most guests go home after the event. Here is a home-town example with 400 guests, two events at ₹1,500 a plate in a banquet hall, and rooms for 30 out-of-town guests.
| Destination (150 guests) | Home town (400 guests) | |
|---|---|---|
| Food with GST | ₹26,55,000 | ₹12,60,000 |
| Venue hire | Included with rooms and food | ₹4,00,000 |
| Rooms with GST | ₹21,24,000 | ₹1,57,500 |
| Decor, photography, music | ₹16,00,000 | ₹9,00,000 |
| Planner and guest travel | ₹11,00,000 | Not needed |
| Total | ₹74,79,000 | ₹27,17,500 |
| Cost per guest | ₹49,860 | ₹6,794 |
In the home-town example, food is taxed at 5% because a banquet hall or outside caterer that is not part of a premium hotel charges the lower rate, and the 15 rooms at ₹5,000 a night are taxed at 5%. The destination wedding costs about 2.75 times as much in total with fewer than half the guests. The home-town figure also leaves out the cost of a larger venue on a peak date in a big city, which can be high.
GST on hotel rooms and catering at a wedding
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is added to most wedding bills. The rates changed on 22 September 2025. For hotels, the rate depends on the room price, called the tariff, per room per night.
| Bill | GST rate from 22 Sept 2025 |
|---|---|
| Hotel room up to ₹7,500 a night | 5% |
| Hotel room above ₹7,500 a night | 18% |
| Food and banquets at a hotel with any room above ₹7,500 (a "specified premises") | 18% |
| Outdoor catering and banquets elsewhere | 5% |
| Decor, photography, planners, DJs and most other services | 18% |
