The short answer
The cost of marriage in India averaged about **₹39.5 lakh** in WedMeGood's 2025 survey of 2,000 couples, up about 8% in a year. A simple wedding with 100 to 200 guests can stay within a few lakh rupees, while premium weddings cross ₹1 crore. Food is usually the largest single line, so the guest count and the price per plate decide most of the budget.
Average cost of marriage in India in 2026
The best recent figure comes from WedMeGood, a wedding planning platform. Its 2025 report surveyed over 2,000 couples marrying between April 2025 and March 2026. The average budget was ₹39.5 lakh, about 8% more than the year before. An average is pulled up by a few very large weddings, so many families spend much less, and some spend far more.
The city matters too. In the same survey, Jaipur had the highest average at about ₹73 lakh, helped by palace and destination weddings. Delhi averaged about ₹38 lakh, Bengaluru and Hyderabad about ₹37 lakh, and Mumbai about ₹35 lakh.
Wedding cost breakdown by head
Most Indian wedding budgets are made of the same lines. Their share changes from family to family, but this is where the money usually goes:
- Venue and catering. Usually the largest part. Hotels often price food "per plate", meaning per guest per meal, and may include the hall if you meet a minimum number of plates.
- Decor and flowers. Stage, entrance, lighting and mandap. Costs rise quickly with fresh flowers and themed sets for each event.
- Outfits and jewellery. Bridal wear, groom's wear and clothes for close family, plus gold jewellery, which is often the second-largest line.
- Photography and video. A team for each event, a pre-wedding shoot, an album and an edited film.
- Invitations and gifts. Printed or digital cards, gift boxes, and return gifts for guests.
- Make-up, mehendi, music and travel. Smaller lines one by one, but together they can add 10% to 20% to the total.
Gold is worth pricing separately because its cost moves daily. At about ₹14,258 a gram for 24K gold in late October 2026, a 50 g set in 22K gold with 12% making charges comes to about ₹7,53,395 with GST and hallmarking. Check today's rate with the gold price calculator before you shop.
Wedding cost per plate: maths for 100, 300 and 500 guests
Food is the line that grows fastest with the guest list. Caterers and planning platforms commonly quote about ₹500 to ₹1,500 a plate for standard catering, and about ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 or more at premium hotels. Here is one meal at three price points:
| Guests | At ₹800 a plate | At ₹1,500 a plate | At ₹2,500 a plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | ₹80,000 | ₹1,50,000 | ₹2,50,000 |
| 300 | ₹2,40,000 | ₹4,50,000 | ₹7,50,000 |
| 500 | ₹4,00,000 | ₹7,50,000 | ₹12,50,000 |
Catering cost = guests × price per plate × number of meals
- Most weddings have more than one meal. With a sangeet, a wedding dinner and a reception, 300 guests at ₹1,500 a plate is about ₹13,50,000, not ₹4,50,000.
- Every 10 guests at ₹1,500 a plate add ₹15,000 for each meal. Trimming the list often saves more than bargaining on decor.
- Ask whether the plate price includes GST, service charge, live counters and the hall. These are often billed on top.
Wedding season: why November to February costs more
The main Indian wedding season runs from about November to February, with a second peak around April and May. Demand is highest on auspicious dates (muhurat days), so venues, caterers, decorators and photographers charge their highest rates then and often ask for larger advances.
The scale is large. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimated about 46 lakh weddings in the short window from 1 November to 14 December 2025 alone, with spending of about ₹6.5 lakh crore. In WedMeGood's survey, about 38% of couples struggled to get their preferred date and about 34% named price pressure as a problem.
How families fund a wedding: savings, gold and loans
Most weddings are paid from savings. In WedMeGood's survey, about 79% of couples used savings, about 15% took loans (from banks or from family and friends), and about 6% sold assets. Many families also use gold they have collected over years, either as jewellery for the bride or as a gold loan.
A personal loan is the usual bank option. It needs no security, and the bank charges a fixed interest rate based on your income and credit score. Bank rates commonly start at about 10% to 11% a year for strong profiles and go higher for others. On a ₹10 lakh loan at 13% a year:
| Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total interest | Total payable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 years | ₹89,317 | ₹71,807 | ₹10,71,807 |
| 2 years | ₹47,542 | ₹1,41,004 | ₹11,41,004 |
| 3 years | ₹33,694 | ₹2,12,982 | ₹12,12,982 |
| 4 years | ₹26,827 | ₹2,87,720 | ₹12,87,720 |
| 5 years | ₹22,753 | ₹3,65,184 | ₹13,65,184 |
On the survey's average loan of ₹15.5 lakh at 13% over 5 years, the EMI (equated monthly instalment, the fixed amount you repay each month) is about ₹35,267. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest. Try your own numbers in the personal loan EMI calculator.
Saving ahead works the other way: your money earns interest instead of paying it. Putting aside ₹50,000 a month for 3 years at 7% a year grows to about ₹20.08 lakh.
What the same wedding money becomes if invested
A wedding is a personal choice, and this is not a case for spending less. It helps, though, to see the full trade-off. Here is what ₹25 lakh, a little below the survey average, could grow to if invested once and left alone:
| ₹25 lakh invested once | After 10 years | After 20 years |
|---|---|---|
| At 7% a year (similar to long-term deposits) | ₹49.18 lakh | ₹96.74 lakh |
| At 10% a year (a long-run equity assumption) | ₹64.84 lakh | ₹1.68 crore |
Prices also rise. If wedding costs grow at 6% a year, a wedding that costs ₹25 lakh today will cost about ₹44.77 lakh in 10 years. Parents planning for a child's wedding can use these two numbers together: the future cost, and what regular saving can build by then. Equity returns are not guaranteed and can be negative over short periods.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost of marriage in India?
About ₹39.5 lakh, according to WedMeGood's 2025 survey of over 2,000 couples marrying between April 2025 and March 2026. Destination weddings averaged about ₹58 lakh. Many weddings cost much less than the average.
How much does a simple wedding cost in India?
It depends mostly on guests and food. With 100 guests at ₹800 a plate, one meal costs about ₹80,000. Add a modest venue, clothes, jewellery and photography, and a small wedding can stay within a few lakh rupees. Jewellery is often the largest cost in a simple wedding.
What is the per plate cost for a wedding in India?
Commonly about ₹500 to ₹1,500 a plate for standard catering and ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 or more at premium hotels. Luxury palace hotels can charge much more. Check whether GST, service charge and the hall are included.
How much does a wedding for 500 guests cost?
Food alone for one meal is about ₹4,00,000 at ₹800 a plate and ₹12,50,000 at ₹2,500 a plate. With three meals, decor, outfits, jewellery and photography, a 500-guest wedding usually falls in the mid-range or premium band.
Is it a good idea to take a personal loan for a wedding?
That is a personal decision. The cost is clear, though: a ₹10 lakh loan at 13% over 5 years has an EMI of about ₹22,753, and you repay much more than you borrowed. Compare this with saving the same amount each month before the wedding.
When is the wedding season in India?
Mainly November to February, with another peak around April and May. Auspicious dates in these months book out early and cost the most.
